Notice how Disney Insider Warwick Davis USPS Star Wars is nearly identical to “Star Wars” Weekends with Star Warwick Davis?  I wonder who plagiarized who?

A month or two ago I was riding my bicycle into work when my path crossed a couple of patrol cars with their lights on which were stopped at the southbound bus stop at Bethany Home Road and 27th Avenue.  All of the traffic was merging left into the inner lane so as to give the cops an open lane between us and them.  Then, 3/8 of a mile later, I was pulled over by a patrol car myself.  When the officer asked me if I knew why I was pulled over, I admitted that I did not.  He tried to claim that I passed them without giving them a lane of clearance.  When I stated that I had indeed moved to the inner lane as required by law and then went back to the outer lane afterward he seemed taken back, and then told me that I was only going to receive a warning.  It is very frustrating to be accused of not doing something which I did indeed do.

Yet it doesn’t stop there.  Friday night I was bicycling home from Wayne’s place after work.  A similar situation happened on 7th Street between Northern Avenue and Butler Drive when traveling northbound at night.  This time, when I merged into the inner lane, I had one guy in a van who honked and shouted a threat at me, “You’re gonna die!”  Immediately after that a black car with thick tinted windows honked at me and drove in the open lane between the rest of us and the patrol cars.  Yet, once I was between Butler Drive and Alice Avenue I was pulled over by the three officers we had all just passed.  Did they pull over the guy in the van who they must have heard threaten me?  No.  Did they pull over the car that illegally drove through the lane next to the patrol cars?  No.  They pulled over me, and then had the audacity to ask me why I had merged into the inner lane.  Once I explained to them that it is a requirement of the law, I was told that in the future they would prefer that I pass them on the right by pulling up onto the sidewalk.  When I pointed out that the people they were speaking with were blocking all traffic on the sidewalk, I was told to be slow and careful when passing patrol cars on the sidewalk in their preferred method.

Is it any wonder why society in general is losing respect for our law enforcement?  All of the officers in these two incidents were kind, friendly, personable people who truly seemed like they cared.  Yet they are pulling over a law abiding citizen for following the rules of the road.  Worse, in one instance they’re trying to accuse me of doing the exact opposite of what I did; in the other instance I’m being told to do something incredibly dangerous instead of following the law.  Still worse, in the later incident the cops chose to pull over the law abiding citizen rather than either of the law breakers who passed at the same time.  Worse even than that, all of these are cops who are all employed by the same city who are giving me conflicting advice within a few weeks of each other.  Know your laws.  It’s your only defense against unwarrented police harassment.

The crime that created Superman: Did fatal robbery spawn Man of Steel?

It’s been a busy August.  My maternal grandmother has died, I’ve attended the first annual Tunnels & Trolls Convention, lectored at my grandmother’s memorial mass, attended her graveside service, flew out to the fourty-first GenCon, and am preparing now to run At-Con Program Operations for CopperCon 28 this upcoming weekend.  My bicycle broke down a few weeks ago, and they‘re still awaiting the part as of yesterday.  My house became a complete mess due to no time for cleaning, and I received a notice about the uncontrolled growth in my yard.

So I find myself with some time to post here, for a change.  Yet, strangely I’m not in the mood.  Perhaps it’s due to the fact that I am woefully out of practice.  Thus I am forcing myself to post anyway.  Or perhaps I’m not ready to compose a memorial for my grandmother.

I found a stack of Batman Adventures volume two comics which I had never read.  I had had a subscription to Batman:  Gotham Adventures which was canceled and replaced with this second run of Batman Adventures.  I didn’t like the drastic change in tone and theme, so I never read the rest of the series and let the subscription expire.  So I read the first seven issues this month.  It was well paced, well scripted, and brilliant in making drastic changes in character circumstances while maintaining continuity and characterization.  It’s amazing what five years of perspective will do.  Now I regret not having any of the subsequent issues.  The previous series was more a series of one shots, while this newer series had stand alone issues which wove into a single whole.  Each issue laid the groundwork for future issues, without a need to own any other issue than the one in your hands.  Yet the story made you want to own all of the other issues.  Issue one takes the step of introducing the main characters, letting readers see how each of the heroes and villains will be portrayed in this series.  A great place for new readers and old readers alike.  I understand that this first issue was also published with a Free Comic Book Day cover.

  • Past Events Are Not Indicitive of Future Results

Ancient_Scribe discusses the balance between logic and reason versus imagination and emotion in regards to faith.

Sorry I have been gone so long.  I’m likely to be gone for another month or so.  I’ve had a lot of content which I would have liked to type down, but no time to do so.

This past weekend I was at-con Program Director and at-con Participant Green Room for LepreCon XXXIII.  Lea was good enough to take care of the two departments pre-con.  This past weekend also saw family from Pennsylvania and New York in town.  Oh, and my bicycle was in the shop again.

One thing I found interesting about the convention is how con-com past and present began similar conversations with me.  The basic premise between them all is that conventions are attracting smaller numbers because the old guard feels that they’ve done their share of the difficult work already and the new guard doesn’t have anyone willing and/or capable of doing the amount of work that’s actually required.  I wonder if it’s fixable or if you’d have to build a new organization from scratch.  The folks at ConEvents did that for local gaming conventions.

I have to admit that I rarely make long term personal goals.  For the most part, I’m content with what I have.  Currently, my long term plans include paying off my credit cards and deepening my relationships with God and the people in my life.  Perhaps that’s why I enjoy assisting others in making and realizing their long term goals.  When I arrived a few minutes earlier than usual to a friend’s house I ran into another friend who was to have left before I was to arrive.  The two were discussing the trouble with conventions way back then.  As usual, I suggested doing something rather than just lamenting.  I’ve always been a doer than a complainer.  It makes me loved and hated in the workplace.

That’s how I ended up working conventions at all.  I wasn’t attending conventions in their heyday, so I didn’t know they were broken except through other people.  Working the conventions has made me a lot of new acquaintances and friends I would never have made otherwise.  It’s given me life skills which have proven useful in the workplace, and exposed me to life in ways to lessen my naivety.  Has it impoved anything?  Minutely.  Can I do more?  Possibly.  It all depends on how much energy I want to divote to the project.

There was once a gaming group that was draining all of my energy.  I joined them during a transition period in my life.  Everyone was telling me to drop them, but I was seeing the progress I was making with them and kept pushing myself for them.  And to this day I do think that I did a lot for them, but I reached a point where I had to decide between my health and them.  I ran into a few of them many years later. They had kept the lesson I gave them and even grown a little in the interim.  They still need a lot of work, and I occassionally pray for them.

Conventions haven’t reached that point.  It’s true that I don’t want to do Program Director every year ad nausium.  It’s not good for my health, and it’s not good for the health of the convention.  Doing Program every year would make me reach that point where I’d cut conventions from my life.

I also helped found Tricuspa Figment Live Action Systems in order to help Tricuspa realise his dream.  He wanted to run a live action game based around Pokémon.  He saw an untapped gaming market:  live action games trageting youth and their families.  Pokémon Live Action gave children and adults alike something to do at Hexacon for as much or as little as they wanted.  He broke a lot of moulds on how live action systems are supposed to be run.  However he couldn’t do it on his own.  Since then we’ve continued to innovate each year:  pushing ourselves and the systems he creates to new levels.  It’s not my dream, but I enjoy helping him reach his.  So far TFLAS is a fun challenge.  I’m willing to see where it might go.

Due to conversations with folks at the convention this past weekend, I’m reevaluating my relationships to both concom and TFLAS.  How do I help both reach the next level?  What can I do, and what is beyond me?  Is there a point after which I cannot go?  What could such a point be?

  • Joy and Blessings to All This Easter Season

The 1998 Good Friday accords are finally seeing fruition.

I had made plans and fixed my schedule to attend Holy Thursday events at my parish, so imagine my annoyance Wednesday night when those plans fell through.  I had moved the HLA4 planning meeting from Thursday to Wednesday.  So on my way home from a rather successful meeting, my chain derails and the left pedal slams into my left knee.  I walked the bike out of the arterial intersection I was in.  Once I was on the sidewalk, I bent down to fix it, only to discover that bending the knee was too painful.  I tried various things, but the knee was swelling up fairly bad.  So, one quick cell phone call to Monte and he was gracious enough to give me a lift.  As soon as I was home I put some ice on the knee, which helped the pain and swelling immensely.

The rest of the week I was bus bound, with an ACE bandage for support.  As my parish is nowhere near a busline, I wasn’t going to be able to get to Holy Thursday events without walking over a mile from a bus stop, and then I’d have to walk almost five miles home as bus service would have been over by the time I would have left.  I knew that my knee was not up to that.

By the time Holy Saturday rolled around it was time to head to the Easter Vigil at St. Theresa Parish.  My mother picked me up from work and we headed over.  John and Matt, seminarians I grew up with in Life Teen, were home for Easter.  In fact, John is now a deacon, soon to be a full priest!  How exciting.  John did his first baptisms, and boy did he have a lot to do!  This was one of the most full Easter Vigils in a long time, with the baptised and those being confirmed filling from one door of the church to almost the other.  That also meant that mass ended close to 23:00, so not everyone stayed for the whole thing.  Dave and Patty were there, and Dave finally was confirmed.  He had gone through various confirmation classes over the years, but they always moved before he could complete it.  I was so proud of him for completing his journey.

Father Mike gave a wonderful homily.  Afterward I had a chance to talk privately with John, Matt, Dave, and Patty, as well as enjoy a full meal of snacks including wraps, cheese cubes, fruit, vegetables, cake, and lemonade.

Once it got late my mother took me back to their place where I crashed in the spare room.  Before going to bed I gave my stepfather his birthday card and gift, for which he was grateful.  In the morning, Mom made breakfast for everyone and had us search for Easter baskets (actually paper bags with our names on them).  Afterwards, we went over to my grandparents to help cook dinner (ham and cabbage, mashed potatoes, baby carrots, apple sauce, and cranberry juice cocktail).  After dinner, we played some games (Yahtzee, Uno, and Rack-o), chatted or napped, and swung on the porch.  Then it was time to go home and prepare for work the next day.

So, I hear this story on the radio about a man walking 1000 miles to prove his love for a woman after they broke up.  The newscaster says that she polled the women in the office, and they all thought that jewelry would have worked just as well.  Isn’t that sad?  They’re admitting, to the whole of their wide listening office, that their love can be bought with material things.  Is that really love then?  No wonder the state of our society is the way it is.  I feel compelled to pray, not just for these shallow news people, but for all such people who are in relationships for all the wrong reasons.

Even sadder was the co-anchor, Connie Weber’s response.  She said that jewelry would have been better!  Of course, I’m not surprised.  She treats her co-anchor Ned Foster like dirt.  A lot of times, he can send the zingers back, but other times she’ll go so far the other news people are shocked and Ned will have to tell her to stop.  So is it any wonder that later in the same newscast Connie says that she’s like to thank her husband for putting up with her nagging for ten years.  She then goes on to comment that the thing she remembers from thier wedding ten years ago today was that she cried all day because it was snowing, ruining it (somehow).  So I guess I’ll be making a special intention for her and her husband whiling I’m praying each day for the shallow people.

  • Kan’t sub Fish for Chicken

The Shoemaker and the Brownies is probably what inspired Hermione to create S.P.E.W.

Our parish always sends us little gift booklets at the start of each Advent and Lent.  This Lent we recieved Lent 2007: A Time for Mending: Daily Scripture Meditations and Prayers.  The entry from Thursday After Ash Wednesday reads, “Imagine a life where we can peel away our many disguises and let the world see us as we truly are:  vulnerable, valuable, hurting, hoping, dreaming, believing, yearning for love and acceptance.  Finally, we can be honest about our shortcomings, transparent in our motives, and genuine in our love.”  That totally sums up why I switched from a hard drive journal to a web journal

Then the entry for Sunday of the First Week reads, “When you’re in the midst of troublesome times, write down your wake-up calls in a journal.  What truths are they telling you about yourself?  How are they renewing and reviving your spirit?”  Awesome blogging material to be sure.  Hopefully I have done and will continue to do as such.

Friday I had an inspiration while riding past a KFC.  They have these commericals about a Fish Snacker.  So I turn in, lock up my bicycle, go inside, and wait in line.  I asked the lady in the line if they stocked fish snackers, as they had nothing about fish anywhere inside the restaurant.  She confirmed the hidden menu selection.  So I asked if I could order a fish-based KFC bowl.  No.  So I left.

If they have the fish in stock, why not offer it as a fish bowl?  Because KFC doesn’t want my money, that’s why.  Silly KFC.  Why turn down good $US?

Saturday night after work I stopped by Metrocenter to pick up some February and March cards from The Card Shoppe.  Afterwards, I dropped by Game Nightz to find out why they never called me back last year.  The owner’s lame excuse:  he wasn’t able to find a distributor which carries Shadowfist, so he had no reason to call me back.  Lame.  He couldn’t be bothered to call and tell me even that?  He obviously doesn’t want my business.  He and the people at KFC must have gone to the same school for bad buisness.

So, I told him that Shadowfist Games sells direct, but that if he needed a distributor that he should try Potomac.  He was so obviously disinterested, he didn’t even bother to write anything down.  I’ve offered to run demos in his store, but he claims that there’s no room in his schedule.  That night there was no one in the gaming area, but he still turned down Shadowfist demos in his store.  I bought Shadowfist from him when he was still an employee of Game Daze.  I just don’t see his current resistance.

Ugh.  I’m tired.  Time to go to bed.

They moved the Sam’s Club, so now it’s closer to home and I don’t have to cross the interstate.  Yay!

Sunday, Father Milt’s homily tied the gospel reading into Lent (which started today).  He mentioned how the Navy has a saying that the difficult they’ll do today, but the impossible will take a little longer to get done.  Jesus’ lesson asks us to step outside of our comfort zones, and do what might seem difficult or impossible with God’s support.  That is also what Lent asks of us.

After mass, I headed over to Wayne’s to feed and water the pets.  After that, I headed over to Jay & Kim’s for a delicious dinner of steak quesadillas.  After that we watched “Fear Her,” the only episode from Series Two Doctor Who I’d missed.

The following day we all went to the Arizona Renaissance Festival.  The ticket booths were open earlier than usual, and crowds were less than usual.  I finally sat through the new Ded Bob Sho, which was OK.  I’d gotten so tired of the original performer’s political views taking over the show, that it was refreshing to only have one small political view at the very end.  The new performer was also much more upfront that it is an LC show, but that didn’t really stop entire families with small children from staying through the whole show.

Late in the afternoon, the occasional light rain turned into a short downpour, encouraging a major evacuation.  During the downpour, a lightning strike nearby started a fire.  That caused ABC, FOX, and NBC to send news helicopters and hover them directly over the stages of the festival.  Not only was it anachronistic, but it made it difficult to hear the miked performers

I ended up catching the second half of Heroes:  The Best Show on Television after the festival.  I’ll watch the first half on the official site sometime this week (hopefully), although Mike says that all of the good and important stuff I’ve already seen.  Tuesday I was so tired (from a cat who wouldn’t stop caterwauling all night and an early work day start), I went straight to bed as soon as I got home.  It turns out a missed a few phone calls that evening that I didn’t hear ring while commuting home and once in bed.  Oh well.  People will live.

  • January Musings

I had no idea people used YouTube to advertise until my friend George forwarded his advertisement for Team Bias.

I have a self-reflective post and a DarkCon 2007 review floating around in my head which I’ll post here eventually.

B & I saw Curse of the Golden Flower on Civil Rights Day.  Wow!  A definate must see.

It’s been raining these past few days.  Friday, I arrive at work and one of my coworkers says to me, “I thought you’d take the bus today.”  I was astounded.  After six plus years, you’d think he’d know me better.  I love the rain.  I always ride to and from work in the rain.  And this week’s rain has been the best:  steady, but not soaking.  If I don’t have to wear a different set of shoes home than I rode to work, that’s excellent in my book.

Admitably, Saturday was a bit painful.  I had a blowout in my front tire on the way into work, and with the rain the bike just slid out from under me at the same time.  I slid down the asphalt of the street like a slip and slide, and the left side of my neck still hurts.  I did laundry yesterday, and the asphalt stains didn’t come out, so it looks like I’ll have to use bleach.

I’ve been watching the first episode of The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet.  It was decent, for the kind of show it is.  I think the friendship between the hosts is more real than between Regis & Kelly, their main competition.  As I don’t really watch such shows, that’ll probably be the last I see of them.  However, if you like shuch shows, I encourage you to give them a chance.  They do an excellent job, and would definately watch them over Live with Regis & Kelly if given a choice.

Earlier this month I also took the time to listen to the first episode of Ankarlo MorningsDarrell Ankarlo is a conservative talk show host who actually shows respect to folks on all sides of an issue, something few conservative hosts are capable of.  The sad thing is most conservative hosts claim to be Christian, then fail to act like it.  Ankarlo actually seems like the real deal.  And that’s something to appreciate in the media.  He’s no Pat McMahon or Tony Femino, but he’s a good addition to the News 92.3 KTAR schedule.  I’ll probably listen occassionally over time, even if I won’t be a regular listener.

The new Chuy’s on Greenway has finally opened.  They closed down the one on Bell and have changed that to another kind of bar/restaurant by the same owners.  I like the new restaurant, as have my friends and family.  I’ll try to remember to review it soon.

  • Cold Snap!

Which has more caffeine: a cup of coffee, a cup of tea, or a glass of Coke?

This morning when I woke up, the temperature was comfortable, as if it were a Phoenix October.  While I was going to work there was a strong, chilly wind at my back and I knew our winter season had arrived.  Sure enough, on the way home I could feel my fingertips getting numb as I rode against the same wind.  I need to buy new bicycling gloves.  I just don’t like buying stuff for myself this time of year because then invariably someone complains that they could have purchased whatever it was as a Christmas gift for me.

So, I was riding, my fingertips needing the occasional rewarmth of my breath, and I get hit and run.  No, not a t-bone like you’d think, but a black SUV which slowed down, slammed their passenger-side door into my side and arm, and sped off.  With no light on their plates, I wasn’t able to get anything for a report.  So, I’m in pain and noticing the chill in the air when the wind blows a grocery bag into my rear gears stopping me cold.  By the time I could tear out the plastic bag which had wrapped around the gears, my hands were really cold.  Well, then my chain decided to slid into a gap created between my gears and the frame.  I started tugging on it, before I recalled that that was how I ended up needing to call 911 last time.  So I walked over to the bus stop, narrowly missing the bus I needed (despite trying to flag it down and run with my bike).  Standing outside of the bus stop, I got cold.  That wind, blowing on me without the benefit of the sun or the heat generated while riding my bike, made me pull out my emergency jacket from my backpack.  It’s been months since I last had to pull it out.  In fact, that was the first time with the new backpack.

The bus eventually gets me home and I decide that my hands are too cold to meddle with fixing the bicycle until morning, so I go inside and turn on the radio which warned me to “cover the animals and bring in the plants.”  The newsperson thought he was being funny.  But, with a freeze warning being broadcast, that meant it was time to turn on the furnace.  I always forget how to do it every year, despite a handwritten note I leave for myself right on the furnace.  Finally, and hour and a half later I manage to get it on.  I don’t want my pipes to freeze again like they did one year I was trying to be cheep.

Weird, it won’t let me save this entry.  Oh well, after a dozen or so tries I’ll just try again in the morning and hope my cat doesn’t do anything to this in the night.

Oops, I took all that time last night to get the furnace lit and I forgot to turn the thermostat to “heat.”  Hopefully I didn’t do any damage to the house.  It doesn’t feel that cold to me, but what do I know?  Baldr seems OK, too, so that’s good.  The radio claims that the freeze warning is through 9am, but I need to already be on the road by then.  At least the sun will be out while I fix my bicycle.  Wow, I just yawned and could see my breath.  Pretty cool!  Hmmm…the weathercaster said it’ll be colder tomorrow morning and then this front will head east to cool off the rest of the country.  I feel bad for those in colder climates.  At least here in the desert a cold day is below 60 F.  Some places actually go below 50 F for their highs.  Brrrr!
